Although great progress in cancer treatment has been made, there is still much to be learned and cancer clinical trials are an important way to improve current treatments for cancer.

Cancer clinical trials may be offered to patients at any stage of their disease because there is room for improvement in almost every aspect of cancer treatment and cancer management. Some patients may benefit more from the innovative treatments only available in clinical drug trials than from the standard of care. No approved cancer clinical trial ever offers patients anything less than the accepted standard of care. In fact, there is good reason to believe that patients in clinical research trials actually receive enhanced medical care because of the extra attention, oversight and monitoring required. Medical research physicians, nurses and data coordinators join the patient’s existing medical team during the duration of the study.

The status quo will never improve unless new therapies are investigated. Cancer treatment in the US will become stagnant without adequate numbers of clinical trial patients to facilitate the development and testing of new agents. Many altruistic individuals would like to participate in a clinical trial that furthers medical science and leads to improved cancer treatment options for future patients.

What are Clinical Trials?

Clinical trials are the rigorous, scientific study of new therapies or procedures. It represents a carefully controlled process by which the patient's rights and well-being are always paramount while trying to make available new, promising therapies. All the “miracle drugs” of the last decade (such as Gleevec®, Rituxan®, and Herceptin®) have gone through the clinical trial process.
